Rajeswara Rao

Artist

(b. 1960, Vizianagaram) is a contemporary Indian artist whose figurative practice examines the social theatre of modern Indian life. His works are deeply attentive to people—their appearances, aspirations, gestures, desires, and attempts to negotiate changing social identities.

His paintings draw from the visual realities of a society caught between tradition and modernity. Urban aspirations, changing lifestyles, consumerism, social performance, and the desire to belong become recurring subjects, often approached with irony, observation, and an understated sense of humour.

Rao completed his BFA from Andhra University in 1983 and his MFA from Hyderabad Central University in 1990. His practice is informed by photographic memory and direct observation, allowing him to capture fleeting social moments without relying heavily on conventional narrative.

His work presents a perceptive portrait of contemporary Indian society, its changing identities, aspirations, contradictions, and human theatre.
