Madan Meena

Artist

(b. 1974, Rajasthan) is a contemporary Indian visual artist, researcher, and cultural practitioner whose work is deeply engaged with the rural, nomadic, and tribal communities of Rajasthan. His artistic practice grows from a sustained interest in folklore, craft traditions, community histories, and the visual culture of his native region.

Meena’s works frequently draw upon the visual vocabulary of traditional miniature painting, folk art, textiles, wall painting, and oral narratives. His practice brings historical and cultural material into a contemporary context, allowing traditional motifs and characters to acquire new meanings. His research into the art of the Meena tribe, particularly the wall paintings created by Meena women, has been central to his artistic and academic journey.

Born in Narayanpur near Sawai Madhopur, Meena completed his PhD on the Art of the Meena Tribe from the University of Rajasthan. His work extends beyond painting into folklore research, documentation, curatorial projects, and craft revival. He has also published extensively on Rajasthan’s cultural traditions.

His evolving practice creates a sensitive dialogue between heritage and contemporaneity, research and imagination, and cultural memory and artistic expression.
