Laxman Aelay

Artist

(b. 1965, Telangana) is a contemporary Indian artist whose practice is closely connected to the rural landscape and social memory of Telangana. His paintings emerge from a deeply personal relationship with the people and surroundings of Kadirenigudem, the village where he grew up, translating memories of rural life into intimate and evocative imagery.

Aelay is particularly known for his figurative and monochromatic works, in which villagers, homes, streets, and everyday objects become carriers of memory and emotion. His restrained use of line, tone, and texture creates a quiet visual language that evokes both nostalgia and the dignity of ordinary lives. His artistic journey began with signboard painting before leading him towards illustration and formal training in fine art.

He received his formal education in painting from the College of Fine Arts, JNTU, Hyderabad, and has developed an extensive practice as a painter, designer, and illustrator. Aelay’s art remains an enduring reflection on rural memory, human resilience, identity, and the changing landscape of contemporary India.
