Jaya Baheti’s paintings emerge from an intimate relationship with colour, nature and the human figure. Her compositions possess an instinctive quality, with simplified figures appearing within expansive fields of colour that suggest memory, emotion and a quiet sense of freedom.
The feminine figure occupies an important place within her imagery, often placed in close relationship with trees, foliage and natural surroundings. Rather than presenting nature as a mere backdrop, Baheti allows it to become part of the emotional world of her figures, creating paintings that carry an atmosphere of nostalgia and serenity.
Originally associated with Mumbai and Pune, Baheti moved to Hyderabad after her marriage in 1990, where the city and its cultural environment became an important part of her artistic journey. Her practice developed through a sustained engagement with painting and an intuitive approach to composition.
