Gurudas Shenoy

Artist

(b. 1965, Udupi, Karnataka) is an acclaimed Indian painter whose works are animated by light, colour and the ever-changing character of the city and landscape. Growing up in an artistic family, he inherited an early sensitivity towards painting, while the influence of M.F. Husain further broadened his understanding of modern Indian art.

His celebrated cityscapes dissolve architecture into movement, colour and atmosphere. Buildings, streets and urban structures emerge through luminous passages of paint rather than strict architectural description, while his landscapes similarly move towards abstraction, suggesting vast terrains through texture, light and shifting colour.

Shenoy graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda, in 1988. Working primarily in oil, he developed a distinctive technique that gives the medium an almost watercolour-like luminosity. His practice has also extended into drawing, murals and large-scale installations. His work continues to occupy the delicate threshold between the recognisable city and the abstraction of memory.
