Fawad Tamkanat (b. 1962, Hyderabad) is a contemporary Indian painter whose work is deeply rooted in the cultural landscape and architectural memory of the Deccan. His paintings draw upon the streets, people and historic character of Hyderabad, transforming familiar surroundings into atmospheric compositions imbued with nostalgia and quiet drama.
Old houses, winding lanes, domes, stairways and city facades frequently inhabit his canvases, while his portraits of women reveal a more intimate and contemplative dimension of his practice. Rich reds, deep blues, greens and turquoise lend his works a distinctive warmth, allowing architecture, figure and colour to merge into an evocative portrait of place.Tamkanat completed his B.F.A. in Painting from JNTU College of Fine Arts, Hyderabad, in 1986 and his M.F.A. in Painting from the University of Hyderabad in 1990, receiving Gold Medals during his academic career. The literary influence of his father, the Urdu poet Shaz Tamkanat, and his own engagement with the cultural traditions of Hyderabad have remained important influences on his artistic sensibility. His paintings continue to preserve the spirit of Hyderabad not through literal documentation, but through a deeply personal interplay of memory, architecture, colour and imagination.
