Douglas John

Artist

Douglas John (b. 1967, Solapur) is a contemporary Indian artist whose practice has evolved from observations of the urban landscape towards a more contemplative engagement with light, spirituality, memory, and human experience. After moving to Bombay at sixteen, he became fascinated by its architecture, streets, crowds, and shifting light—elements that shaped his early visual vocabulary. With time, the cityscape gave way to more introspective imagery. In series such as In Search of Light and Inner Divinity, figures appear as travellers, pilgrims, and seekers moving through luminous spaces. His work brings together influences from Indian murals and miniature traditions with elements of modern Western painting, creating richly layered compositions that move between the physical and spiritual.

John completed his B.F.A. from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1990 and his M.F.A. from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in 2009. His practice has since expanded beyond painting into sculpture and video, allowing him to explore movement, memory, faith, and the experience of the city through different forms. His Inner Divinity series received the National Academy Award in 2019, adding an important recognition to a practice that continues its search for light—both as a visual phenomenon and as a metaphor for inner discovery.
